Group of teachers in literacy training session

"Joan Sedita understands the research based science of reading and also has a keen instinct for what teachers need to know. She understands teachers, classrooms, students, and principals and combines this knowledge effectively to relate well to each of these essential groups."

—Barbara Gardner, former Massachusetts Associate Commissioner of School Readiness

Keys to Literacy Services

To address literacy in grades 4 through 12, schools need solutions that are research-based, effective and practical. Keys to Literacy provides professional development in the area of content reading instruction for reading comprehension and vocabulary. We support that professional development with school-wide literacy planning.

Our professional development in adolescent literacy equips all teachers to provide instruction in comprehension strategies and vocabulary skills that are integrated into the content classroom curriculum. Our onsite professional development approach combines initial training with long-term follow-up support. It engages administrators and instructs teachers. We provide small-group follow-up sessions that include the training of a building-based coach who will ensure ongoing implementation after we are gone. Our primary comprehension professional development modules include:

The Key Three Routine: Comprehension Strategies

Key Vocabulary Routine

We also offer professional development for the following related topics:

Middle and High School Literacy Planning

LETRS Training

Key Notebook Routine: Organization Skills

The ANSWER Key to Open Response

In addition, we offer teacher training workshops in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

As former teachers and administrators, we understand the challenges of the students, classroom teachers, and the front office. As a result we have carefully designed our services to fit the reality and needs of schools today to ensure successful school-wide adoption and improvements in student literacy.
