Keys to Literacy has provided consulting and professional development in adolescent literacy in 20 states to over 100 public schools and districts, and over 40 private schools, colleges, and other educational institutions. We have also presented keynote addresses and workshops at numerous national, state, and regional professional education conferences. Our current work includes the following:
Bay State Reading Initiative (MA): We have partnered with BSRI to provide reading comprehension professional development to 14 schools across Massachusetts.
Chelsea Public Schools, Chelsea, MA: Over the past three years, we have provided extensive training in The Key Comprehension Routine to several cohorts. This year, we have used specialized training to delve more deeply into comprehension strategies for previously trained teachers (i.e., advanced training focused on Bloom's Taxonomy, Main Ideas, and Summarizing), and we continue to train new cohorts of teachers as well.
Chicopee Public Schools, Chicopee, MA: Now in our third year of work in Chicopee, we are training a new cohort of teachers in The Key Comprehension Routine (both initial and follow-up training), as well as providing extensive follow-up training for previously trained teachers. We also provided ANSWER Key to Open Response onsite in Chicopee this year.
Contoocook Valley (ConVal) School District, Peterborough, NH: Over the past three years, we have provided extensive training in The Key Comprehension Routine. as well as The Key Vocabulary Routine. This year, we continue to train new teachers in the district as well as provide extensive follow-up training. We also provided ANSWER Key to Open Response training.
Fitchburg Public Schools, Fitchburg, MA: In 2010, we worked with Fitchburg in comprehensive Literacy Planning and have begun training in The Key Comprehension Routine this year.
Greater Lawrence Technical School, Andover, MA: Last year, we provided onsite training for The Key Comprehension Routine and are training a new cohort of teachers this year.
Kinnelon Public Schools, Kinnelon, NJ: Last year, we provided onsite training for The Key Comprehension Routine; we continue to provide follow-up training and are training a new cohort of teachers this year as well.
Lowell Public Schools, Lowell, MA: Over the past three years, we have provided extensive training in The Key Comprehension Routine to several cohorts. This year, we continue to train new cohorts of teachers.
Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE): Since 2003, Joan Sedita has served as a consultant to the Office of Reading secondary literacy initiative; she was a Vision Committee member of the statewide adolescent literacy committee as well as a keynote speaker and workshop presenter at multiple Secondary Literacy Network planning conferences.
Massachusetts Striving Readers Statewide Literacy Plan: Representing Keys to Literacy, Joan Sedita is a member of the working group to develop a comprehensive statewide literacy plan for Massachusetts. This project is funded through the federal Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Program.
NH READS: A federally funded project of the NH Department of Education and SERESC (Southeast Regional Educational Center), NH READS develops and provides professional development for reading comprehension to middle and high schools throughout New Hampshire. The Key Three Routine (now The Key Comprehension Routine) is being used as the principal professional development program for improving adolescent literacy.
North Adams Public Schools, North Adams, MA: In 2010, we worked with North Adams in comprehensive Literacy Planning, and continue to do so this year. We have also provided onsite training for The Key Comprehension Routine) and continue to provide review and follow-up training this year. North Adams has also received training in The Key Vocabulary Routine.
North Carolina State Improvement Project II (NC SIP II): This statewide program provides professional development and program support services to school districts in the areas of literacy, math and behavior in order to improve the performance and success of students with learning disabilities. Keys to Literacy programs are a part of the SIP program offerings.
Pawtucket School Department, Pawtucket, RI: Also in our third year with Pawtucket, we are currently providing initial and follow-up training in The Key Comprehension Routine to a new cohort of middle school teachers.
Philadelphia Public Schools, Philadelphia, PA: Currently in our first year of work in Philadelphia, we are providing onsite initial teacher training for The Key Comprehension Routine as well as several onsite follow-up sessions at individual schools; we are also providing several days of onsite Literacy Planning.
South Shore Charter Public School, Norwell, MA: SSCPS partnered with a local public district to train teachers in The Key Comprehension Routine last year and are having their own The Key Vocabulary Routine training this year.
