Our Mission

"Through better training of educators, our goal is to improve literacy skills so students can become more literate, fulfilled and productive members of society."

"For over 30 years I have dedicated myself to the field of adolescent literacy by teaching students and training teachers. The name of my company, Keys to Literacy, highlights the fundamental nature of this mission – to prepare teachers in grades 4 through 12 to teach reading comprehension skills through instruction that is embedded in content. Our professional development for reading comprehension gives teachers the keys to unlock literacy for their students. We strive to make educators aware of successful, research-based instructional practices, and how to apply that knowledge to their teaching."

A Focus on Grades 4 to 12

As we enter the 21st century, improving reading comprehension is widely recognized as an educational priority across all grades. Of special concern are issues related to adolescent literacy for students in grades 4 through 12. National assessments indicate that far too many of America's children are reading at levels that are unacceptably low.

Teachers of grades 4 through 12 typically receive little preparation in teaching reading comprehension and vocabulary skills, yet their students continue to need instruction and reinforcement of reading comprehension strategies. Textbooks and other support material are often challenging for many intermediate through high school students. Many have difficulty comprehending the content they are learning. For these reasons, quality professional development in reading comprehension instruction is needed. Keys to Literacy provides research-based reading comprehension instruction workshops that equip teachers to help students meet literacy demands in school and on state assessments.

Schools need solutions that are proven, research-based, practical to implement and immediately useable. Our staff of adolescent literacy experts has significant experience with reading issues in grades 4 through 12. We understand the reality of working in a school because we have been there as teachers and administrators. Our vast experience has enabled us to develop our "Keys" series of reading comprehension workshops and practical and effective school-wide literacy plans for school systems nationwide.
