Teaching reading comprehension

The Key Vocabulary Routine

Participants learn a routine for embedding vocabulary instruction while teaching existing content material. The course begins with 2 days of initial training; participants are then expected to try activities with students. Beginning about a month later, follow-up training (2 days) provides guided practice time to generate lessons and small-group sharing sessions. The program is designed to support a consistent approach to vocabulary instruction as students move from grade to grade and class to class.

To support implementation of the routine by a team of teachers, The Key Vocabulary Routine includes two-day advanced training for building-based coaches/facilitators to provide deeper practice with the application of the routine with various subjects, as well as peer-to-peer coach training.

Because The Key Vocabulary Routine is designed to be used by a team of teachers, it is essential for administrators to learn about the program and how to support its integration in all subjects. This half-day Administrator Training provides a review of the program, covers how administrators can support building coaches and teachers trained in The Key Vocabulary Routine, and presents tools for recognizing use of the routine in the classroom.
